There are a lot of videos explaining Buteyko breathing on line, these are the best ones I’ve found. As well as helping me through COVID, I had started to practice this 6 weeks previous to catching COVID in the hope it will increase the oxygen supply to my muscles and help my energy levels. It is well known that those with fibromyalgia have a poor oxygen supply to muscles.
Here are 2 good videos that summaries Patrick’s reason’s to do Buteyko breathing.
Patrick McKeown’s Ted talk:
Shut your Mouth and Change your Life | Patrick McKeown | TEDxGalway
How To Reduce Stress and Anxiety By Changing The Way You Breathe: Patrick McKeown | Bitesize. This video is another good summary and has an interesting point to help with doing teaching presentations.
This is a good free App from the Buteyko clinic. It has short videos such as Unblock the Nose in 3 minutes and a great relaxation audio and a good way of measuring the Bolt (he calls it the control pause) score, this stores automatically on the App which is a great way of seeing your progress. I started at a 10 seconds score, went up to 34 before COVID and back down to 10, it's now slowly increasing again and I hope will increase a lot more after practicing the recommended exercises which are in the book 'The breathing cure'. I’ve certainly found it to be an accurate measurement for health. Patrick says below a score of 25 is a sign of poor health and only above 25 seconds should you consider doing stress type breathing exercises like 'The Wim Hoff technique'.
This video is good if you want deeper knowledge, Patrick explains the book 'The breathing cure' which I’m currently reading. This goes into the science in more depth for example the biochemistry and the Bohr effect that is often missed with other therapies, the benefit of Nitric Oxide and raising CO2 tolerance. It also has recommended exercise protocols depending on your CP score. Video 1hr 15mins
